1. Adobe Premiere Elements

Adobe’s Premiere Pro is one of the world’s most critically-acclaimed video editing programs, but the company has an equally impressive e tool for beginners as well. Think of Premiere Elements as both an exceptional learning tool and video editing software that can do much more than the basics. It’s the perfect choice for YouTubers who don’t have a clue about editing and want to grow into competent creators fast.

Overview of Features

Unlike its older brother, Premiere Elements is a one-time purchase and works well as a standalone product without utilizing the Creative Cloud. Opening it for the first time presents you with three choices. You may either make a Quick video or edit one from the ground up in Guided and Expert modes.

Quick mode is outstanding for producing simple content that speaks for itself like family or vacation videos. You select the clips and photos to be added to it, add some music, and Premiere Elements will competently create a catchy video. Your editing options are minimal in this mode, but trimming the fat off of boring clips or adding titles is still possible.

Guided mode is where beginners will spend most of their time. Adobe did a fantastic job designing it to function as a comprehensive tutorial area that teaches you with guidance and repetition. The editing steps are logically laid out from start to finish, so you’re first prompted to add media, then adjust video and audio parameters, and finish off with effects and filters.

Each task is accompanied by a step-by-step guide and an arrow that points at the pertinent part of the user interface. Speaking of which, the UI is clean and same for Guided and Expert modes. That lets you learn the necessary steps and effortlessly remember and repeat them once you’re ready to ditch the training wheels. Guided edits like filling the frame left by a vertical video and time-lapse are universally applicable. Others are more situational and fun, like adding a glass pane effect or freeze-frame transitions.

Expert mode puts all of Premiere Elements’ tools at your disposal. Smart Trimming is one of the more interesting ones. It uses the Sensei AI to identify boring parts of clips and deletes them to speed up trimming. There’s a suite of audio editing options, color correction and matching, chromakeying, a versatile text tool, and more.

Premiere Elements runs smoothly and crash-free even on older hardware. It’s not the fastest editor around, but its rendering speeds are above average. Publishing a video to YouTube is easy, thanks to a dedicated button. You just have to specify the title and quality, and Premiere Elements will handle the rest.

What We Didn’t Like

Premiere elements is a wonderful tool for growing content creators, but it will only get you so far. There are only three audio and video tracks, so your multicam options are limited. There’s currently no support for 360-degree and VR footage, either.

Pros
Fantastic as an introduction to video editing
Lets you jump between Guided and Expert modes at any time
Clean and intuitive interface
Lots of text tools and video effects
Cons
Few tracks to work with
Doesn’t support some newer video formats

2. iMovie

iMovie is to Final Cut Pro X what Premiere Elements is to Premiere Pro. In other words, a simplified yet effective and highly-polished editor for producing striking YouTube videos with little effort. It’s firmly entrenched in the Apple ecosystem, so PC users will have to look elsewhere. On the other hand, iMovie is the epitome of stability and speedily renders videos, even in 4K. Best of all, using iMovie will help speed your transition to Final Cut Pro when you feel like growing as an editor.

Overview of Features

iMovie is the epitome of simplicity. Everything from importing files to manipulating titles or audio is done in an accessible, sparse interface. There are no windows and settings unnecessary to the current editing step, which helps to focus on the task at hand and speeds up your workflow. iMovie doesn’t come with tutorials per see, but hovering over various icons displays tooltips that will help inexperienced users get a good grasp on the interface.

Importing files is straightforward as iMovie recognizes a wide variety of codecs, including action cam footage. It will automatically pull up all the media you have stored on the iCloud and various Apple devices too. There’s no tagging or rating system, but you can designate clips as rejects or favorites and trim or rotate them before adding anything to the timeline.

There are only three tracks or lanes on the magnetic timeline. Clips placed on it move out of the way without creating gaps, and repositioning one you placed earlier moves everything to its right as well. You can even link clips with transitions and effects that remain applied when you move the clip elsewhere.

iMovie has a solid selection of effects or Clip Filters as they’re referred to here. On the one hand, you have color correction and chromakeying tools. iMovie lets you brighten up dull footage, adjust the contrast and color temperature, or match the colors of footage shot with multiple cameras to ensure consistency. Chromakeying makes working with greenscreen easy. On the other hand, you may add different filters that impact the mood and overall visuals. This has a powerful impact on appearance and can turn a normal-looking video into a nostalgic retrospective or give it a horror vibe.

Text effects and audio are equal robust. You have access to many fonts and can import more from the mac. Associated effects and transitions can be configured in minutes, and properties like alignment or size can be changed straight from the preview window. There are several audio enhancement features like noise reduction and a tool that increases voice volume. You may even give your voice a distorted or robotic sound.

Beginner

What’s Bad About It?

As said above, iMovie is an Apple exclusive. Other than that, Apple’s minimalistic design philosophy means you’ll sometimes need to search long and hard because some obscure tools are tucked away and it isn’t clear where to look. You can’t customize the interface either, which places iMovie among more rigid video editors.

Pros
Beautifully simple interface
Magnetic timeline makes editing intuitive for newcomers
Has an abundance of titling and audio tools
Excellent chromakeying and color grading given its price and purpose
Cons
No PC version
Rigid interface that makes less-used tools hard to find

3. MAGIX Movie Edit Pro

Movie Maker Pro from MAGIX is a versatile video editor YouTubers of all skill levels will embrace. It has enough features to accompany you throughout your YouTube career without ever feeling the need to move on to more advanced programs. A basic yet well-thought-out editing experience awaits the novice, while you can also look forward to advanced sound editing, travel maps, and a slew of effects down the line.

Overview of Features

Unlike most video editing software, Movie Edit Pro places the preview window on the left while the contextual part of the interface sits next to it. You can toggle between the timeline and a storyboard mode that makes conceptualizing your video easier. Clips and photos are all represented equally in storyboard mode, so moving elements of different lengths around is straightforward. Even so, you can access an audio mixer or trimming tools from this view without needing to switch to the timeline.

Templates are another feature beginner YouTubers will love. They are guided storyboards that help you lay out a video in an engaging way while supplying appropriate titles, transitions, and sounds. Each template type comes with a distinct number and sequence of shots. Simple graphics tell you when to insert nature scenes or close-ups to get the desired effect.

You can tinker with finished templates or make videos from scratch on the traditional non-linear timeline. The Pro version of Movie Edit contains 32, while upgrading to either Plus or Premium ups this to 200. Other benefits include access to more filters and effects as well as multicam editing. You can always start off with the basic version and upgrade as your channel and editing needs grow.

While Movie Edit Pro offers many excellent color correction, titling, and effects tools, audio is its stand-out feature set. MAGIX is renowned for the Sequoia audio editing software, and some of its features have made their way into Movie Edit Pro. You can manipulate audio by adding reverb or adjusting multiple sound levels. Several noise-removal tools get rid of sibilants or camera noises while bringing your voice to the forefront.

Travel vloggers will love the Travel Maps add-on. It allows you to quickly visualize a route you’ve taken on a series of detailed maps from all over the world. Using the add-on takes some getting used to, but the result is an attractive visual aids that makes your videos look more professional.

What We Didn’t Like

Media organization and input is Movie Edit Pro’s weak point. Tagging and rating tools are absent. You can’t specify what file type you’re looking for either and are limited to your OS’s file browsing interface. Movie Edit Pro is only available on PC.

Templates make putting simple videos together easy

A preview window takes up the right side with a contextual workspace on the left. The latter changes based on the current editing step you can quickly select through a series of tabs.

Starting a project requires imported media, which you can access from your hard drive or camera. Recording directly from a webcam and desktop screen is supported, as is downloading videos from Instagram or Facebook. Selected footage is arranged on the timeline and ready for trimming. It accepts different video formats and has tools designed to work with action cam footage. You can remove the characteristic fish-eye look and apply further stabilization if the video is shaky. Reversing playback and altering speed is at your disposal too.

Filmora9’s selection of effects is extensive. There are more than 170 transitions and 130 title effects for putting together a truly unique video. You can enhance its look by adding filters, changing color and light properties, or importing look-up tables to simulate camera or film looks. Audio isn’t neglected either, with more than 70 musical tracks and a robust equalizer. You can take advantage of keyframing as well once you’re more experienced.

Are There Drawbacks?

While the main interface isn’t cluttered, the same can’t be said for the effects library. Splitting them into categories helps, but finding a specific one can be a chore. Filmora9 lacks a storyboard mode. This isn’t a major drawback, but it does mean it will be harder to visualize your video’s layout.

Pros
Easy to use yet brimming with advanced features
Extensive effects library
Main editing interface is laid out clearly
Fast render times
Cons
Cluttered effects library can be hard to search
No storyboard mode
Pricing
$39.99 annually or a one-time payment of $69.99

5. Lightworks

Lightworks is a great choice for people looking to get into YouTube video editing on a minimal budget. Its free version is restrictive, but the tools at your disposal are good enough to create eye-catching videos. The interface can be customized or locked into place, there are tabs for each editing step, and render times are blazingly fast.

Overview of Features

One of Lightworks’ unique features is its dual UI. There’s Fixed mode, which separates the interface into four workspaces corresponding to media importing, editing, adding effects, and adjusting audio. Alternatively, you can enter Flexible mode and reposition or resize any window in the UI to create a workspace uniquely suited to your habits.

Lightworks has one of the most comprehensive media import systems on the market but isn’t overwhelming for beginners. The more footage you create, the more you’ll appreciate it as Lightworks lets you tag clips and organize them into bins. These contain all the project files you need for a specific video, or you can make separate bins and sort them by content type and subject matter.

Editing in Lightworks is done on a timeline that takes up the bottom half of the screen with two preview windows and a media library on top. Adding multiple clips from the library will give each a different color, so they’re easier to recognize. You can trim, adjust the speed, etc., either with industry-standard keyboard shortcuts or do everything with icons. Clicking on a tool you’ve never used before brings out a helpful mascot with tips on how to best use it.

The VFX tab is home to numerous transition, filter, and effect options. Lightworks has an excellent color correction tool and lets you make fine adjustments to brightness or contrast by using intuitive wheel s and sliders. LUTs are available, too, as are pre-made filters. Most editing software forces you to apply effects to clips individually. Lightworks is innovative in that it has a separate VFX track. You set up effects on it and can then determine their duration by dragging it to fit the desired number of clips on the timeline.

Lightworks supports a limited selection of the most popular video and audio formats for exporting. Luckily, it is optimized for YouTube, so uploading directly to your channel isn’t a hassle. Best of all, you don’t have to wait until the project is finished to render. Lightworks renders parts of the video you aren’t currently working on in the background, which means upload times are limited only by your internet connection.

What’s Bad About It?

You can use Lightworks for free but should consider paying for it because of the basic version’s shortcomings. Most notably for YouTubers, the maximum output resolution is 720p. There’s a chance that the audio on finished videos won’t be synced. You can’t check this before rendering is complete since the problem doesn’t show up in the editor.

Pros
Lets you choose between fixed and customizable workspaces
Excellent organization and import system
Color-coded clips and helpful tips
Uniquely handles effects application
Renders in the background for faster exporting
Cons
Video output in free version limited to 720p
Audio syncing issues
Pricing
Free
$19.99/month or $139.99/year for the Pro version

6. Camtasia

The editors we’ve talked about so far will create any video you can dream of, but none of them have special tools that make interacting with the audience more engaging. Enter Camtasia, a video editor and eLearning tool in one that’s perfect for YouTubers who specialize in tutorial creation. It has a versatile screen capturing tool, supports callouts, and doesn’t have a steep learning curve. Moreover, it’s a full-fledged editor you can use for other types of content.

Overview of Features

Camtasia’s interface may look complicated to new users. However, you aren’t given time to feel overwhelmed as a first-time startup also triggers an in-depth tutorial. It walks you through a sample project, introducing core editing functions and other features along the way. You’ll pick up everything there is to basic editing and are directed to TechSmith’s site for further learning.

The interface is a standard three-parter that looks similar to Filmora’s. You start by selecting pertinent media and add it to the timeline either directly or by dragging it onto the preview window. The same drag & drop approach is applied to transitions and effects. Managing transitions is intuitive since adding one creates an overlapping portion between two clips. You may then move it to determine the transition’s length.

Camtasia has excellent screen capturing tools. You can record either the entire screen or have it share space with a clip. It’s also easy to zoom into parts of the screen to highlight a detail without impacting the resolution. How-to videos will benefit from Camtasia’s extensive cursor and keyboard options. You can highlight the cursor or hide it depending on the situation. There’s also a tool for creating mouse click and keystroke captures, so your audience knows which actions and shortcuts you’re using at any time.

Camtasia’s audio options tie in with the work as you record mentality. You can use a track’s audio or separate and mute it. This lets you use voiceovers for narration as the video is playing once you have a structured script to read from. You may adjust various sound levels and get rid of noises for cleaner, more professional-sounding results.

Are There Drawbacks?

Camtasia isn’t cheap, and it’s hard to recommend it over free alternatives like iMovie if your content isn’t focused on tutorials. Buying the license doesn’t entitle you to updates either; for these, you have to pay a yearly fee. There aren’t many effects and filters to choose from, which is another downside considering the price.

Pros
Great tutorials for newcomers and advanced users alike
Excellent screen capture tools
Real-time voiceover
Efficient drag & drop workflow
Pricing
One-time payment of $249 plus optional annual fee of $49.75

Adobe Illustrator

What does Illustrator do?

The leading vector software in the market. 1999 suzuki dt 140 repair manual.

Adobe Illustrator is, without question, the main toolused by logo designers and vector artists.

While Photoshop is perfect for raster graphics (images madeof pixels), Illustrator is completely vector-based.

Logos, illustrations and graphics made with AdobeIllustrator are infinitely scalable. No matter how much these images areincreased in size, there’s absolutely no quality loss.

Corel Painter

What does it do?

Best software for creating digital artwork that looks likeit was painted with real paint.

Although many digital artists can create stunningillustrations with Photoshop, Painter goes a little further when it comes toemulating different types of brushes and painting materials.

Painter lets the user choose backgrounds with specifictextures emulating different types of paper. The selection of brushes is also mindboggling, but what really sets this application from other is its set of paints.

It’s possible to pick oil paint, watercolor, spray paint, crayonsamong many, many others.

The difference between the materials is substantial and eventhe way these paints and brushed interact with each other affect the result.

Creating with Painter is like having an entire art storeinside of a computer.

Due to its price, this application is mostly used byprofessionals.

Clip Studio Paint

What does Clip Studio Paint do?

It works very similarly to Adobe Photoshop. Some call it aknockoff version of Adobe’s most popular application.

One of the reasons why Clip Studio Paint became somewhat popularis the fact that it comes as a bonus to those who purchase a Wacom Intuosdrawing tablet. As you must have imagined, there’s a catch. Only Wacom drawingtablets bought in the Americas come with the free software.

In case you purchase your Wacom Intuos from the UnitedStates, Canada, Brazil or any other country in the region, a license to ClipStudio will be provided by the company.

  3. Buying the whole software for a one-time fee is incredibly cheap.

Autodesk SketchBook

What does Autodesk SketchBook do?

It sits somewhere between Adobe Photoshop and Painter.

Truth be told, it’s not as good as the others, but it has oneadvantage worth mentioning.

This software works on regular computers (as the otherapplications from this list), but it can also be used in mobile devices likecellphones.

You may visit Autodesk SketchBook’s website by clicking here.

Who is Autodesk SketchBook for?

  • Students
  • Occasional illustrators

Is Autodesk SketchBook free?

Yes, it’s free for individuals. All it takes iscreating an account and the user can access all the features available.

Only companies need to get a paid licence to use it. Regardlessof that, the license is one of the most affordable ones within the digital artmarket.

Affinity Designer

What does Affinity Designer do?

Affinity Designer is one of the most promising design /illustration applications released within the last few years.

It has a characteristic that sets it apart from all theothers. While other programs work either for raster graphics (pixel-based) orvector graphics, Affinity Designer does both really well.

Within the app it’s possible to switch between a raster and a vector mode, which gives the user creative and technical freedomthat goes beyond what has been seen up until now.

Another amazing thing about Affinity Designer is that itworks both on computers and mobile devices.

You may visit Affinity Designer’s website by clicking here.

Who is Affinity Designer for?

  • Illustrators
  • Designers
  • Digital artists
  • Concept artists
  • Students
  • Professionals

Is Affinity Designer free?

No. Even though the app can be used in different devices(Windows based / Mac / iPad), each one has a different license with a differentprice.

They are all affordable, but none is free.

Krita

What does Krita do?

Krita is a raster graphics editor for those who want todabble in the digital art world.

It’s nowhere near as good as Adobe Photoshop or Painter, butit can be a good choice for someone who is just starting now.

Even though I strongly believe that beginners should first masterindustry-grade software like Photoshop, I understand that the price can keep somestudents away from getting started.

Krita has two features worth mentioning:

  1. It runs on Windows, Mac and Linux (it’s rare tofind this)
  2. It’s an open source project, the developers workentirely for free.

You may visit Krita’s website by clicking here.

Who is Krita for?

  • Illustrators
  • Students

Is Krita free?

Yes. Krita is entirely free and I deeply respect thedevelopers who work on this project because through their hard work new artistsare able to create without spending a single dime.

GIMP

What does GIMP do?

GIMP is probably the best free option for Adobe Photoshop. It can be used for picture editing and digital art.

This is the software I like to use whenever I’m unable touse Photoshop. I highly encourage everyone who works in the digital artindustry to master at the very least two different applications for eachskillset. Meaning, if you’re already familiar with Photoshop, take some time tolearn GIMP.

Knowing how to use different apps is extremely importantbecause sometimes, due to technical issues or simply bad luck, you may not beable to work with your favorite app. On top of that, every illustration /design studio considers this a desirable trait for a designer / illustrator.

GIMP is an open-source raster graphics editor with a verystrong community behind it.

You may visit GIMP’s website by clicking here.

  • Illustrators
  • Designers
  • Photographers
  • Students

Is GIMP free?

Yes. Being an open-source application means that GIMPis entirely free.

Inkscape

What does Inkscape do?

Inkscape is a vector graphics application, just like AdobeIllustrator.

For someone who has been using Adobe Illustrator for a longtime, adapting to Inkscape is not that easy.

In theory, this software can do virtually anything thatIllustrator does, but the workflow is considerably different. The way the toolsare organized also differs from Adobe’s app. Getting used to a different way ofworking can be frustrating and time consuming.

That said, for those who are not familiar with Adobe Illustrator,Inkscape can be a great option for logo design and vector illustration.

Inkscape is the result of a long and ongoing process ofopen-source, community-driven development.

You may visit Inkscape’s website by clicking here.

Who is Inkscape for?

  • Illustrators
  • Designers

Is Inkscape free?

Yes. Inkscape is entirely free. All the developersare volunteers who dedicate their time to improve everyone’s access to a high-qualityalternative to Illustrator.

ArtRage

What does ArtRage do?

ArtRage is the most recent addition to this list and definitelythe least-known application on this article.

By looking at illustrations made with ArtRage, it’s impossiblenot to think about Painter. Although this app is nowhere as feature richas its more popular counterpart, it can be used to create amazing artwork aswell.

While it’s true that ArtRage is substantially cheaper than otheroptions out there, most people would be better off by investing their money inthe already successful Painter.

You may visit ArtRage’s website by clicking here.

Who is ArtRage for?

  • Illustrators
  • Digital artists

Is ArtRage free?

No. Although ArtRage is not particularly expensive,it still is a paid software.

Corel Draw

What does Corel Draw do?

Corel Draw used to be the most popular vectorsoftware in the world. It was even more widely used than Adobe Illustrator.

As time went on and Adobe became increasingly more relevant,Corel Draw started a descending curve that has never stopped.

To be fair, although this application is nowhere near ascommon in design studios as Adobe Illustrator, it’s an extremely powerfulsoftware that has all the resources any vector artist or designer would need.

What really weighs against Corel Draw is that fact thatvirtually every single employer would rather hire someone who is well versed inAdobe Illustrator over someone who has dedicated their years to mastering CorelDraw.

You may visit Corel Draw’s website by clicking here.

Who is Corel Draw for?

  • Vector Illustrators
  • Designers

Is Corel Draw free?

No. Corel Draw is currently being offered on a monthlysubscription base. It costs almost the same as Adobe Illustrator and it’s up toeach individual to choose which software is more suitable to their needs.

Conclusion

Since the best artists and designers use the best tools, people tend to think that the tools are a fundamental part of the artist’ssuccess.

This could not be further a way from the truth. Great artistsare great not because of the applications they work with, but because of theirdedication to learn their craft.

Learning to how to express ideas through colors and shapesis the real end goal, the software is just a tool.

Adobe Digital Art Software

Use this guide to help you pick the tool that best fits yourneeds but try not to worry too much about this. Instead, focus on developingcore abilities, and, above all, practice as much as possible.

Remember to keep on creating!

Bruno Santos

Artists and illustrators have a new super-tool in their arsenal - Drawing Apps. Tech-savvy creatives are making the switch from paper to digital and reaping the benefits that drawing apps and art apps offer - powerful drawing tools, special effects, ability to create vectors or raster images and even 3D models.

There are a ton of drawing apps, art apps, painting apps, and sketch apps available now to creatives, each with their own USP. Some excel in vector drawings, others in graphic illustrations. There are dedicated apps for image manipulation, mimicking hand drawing, and 3d modeling. While several apps come only in paid versions, there are plenty of free drawing apps available as well.

What are the best drawing apps?

Here is a list of the best drawing apps and art apps in 2020 to express your ideas as digital art.

Adobe Photoshop

No list of creative apps would be complete without listing offerings from Adobe. Adobe has led the pack for decades, and Adobe Photoshop is still the professional's choice for raster art creation. Photoshop is one of the best drawing apps for Mac and PC; they also provide accessory apps for mobile devices and tablets.

The biggest drawback of Adobe’s offerings, especially for beginners, is that you now must purchase a subscription to use these apps. For established pros with stable cash flow, this presents little problem, but for aspiring amateurs and beginners, there are plenty of apps that offer as good functionality at a fraction of the cost.

Adobe Photoshop Sketch

If you’re looking for an app that combines the ease and simplicity of drawing on your mobile device with the power of Adobe Photoshop, check out Photoshop Sketch. When combined with your Adobe Creative Cloud subscription, Photoshop Sketch allows you to fine-tune images created on your tablet later on your computer.

Adobe Illustrator

Just as Photoshop is the industry standard for raster pictures, Illustrator is the go-to for vector art. Illustrator is used to create everything from basic graphic design tasks like logos to elaborate and beautiful landscapes and portrait photos. With a little practice, you can make nearly anything into a vector in Illustrator.

Adobe Illustrator Draw

Similar to Photoshop Sketch, but for vector drawing, Illustrator Draw allows you to create vector drawings on the go easily. You can then save them to your creative cloud account and fine-tune them in the full program later. Both Photoshop Sketch and Illustrator Draw are free downloads, but if you want to export the images for later editing, you’ll need a Creative Cloud subscription.

Autodesk Sketchbook

Sketchbook from Autodesk is one of the most robust raster drawing programs you will find. Compared to Photoshop, Sketch is a purpose-built platform for artists on the go. It’s not meant for photo editing or other tasks, so the program focuses on just what you need to draw on your tablet easily. The program is available for Macs, PCs, iOS, and Android devices. Unlike many apps that stick to proprietary or generic formats, Sketchbook conveniently has the option to export to Photoshop PSD format with layers intact. The best part? Autodesk has now released the full-featured drawing program for free.

Astropad Studio

The Astropad Studio is a different sort of app that can be a great help to folks looking to create digital drawings. For Mac and iPad users, Studio allows you to connect your iPad wirelessly to your desktop and use it as if it were a drawing tablet. The interface is pretty smooth, but make sure you have a clean system with plenty of free memory to avoid lag. You’ll also want a great stylus like the Apple Pencil.

Digital

Affinity Designer

The Affinity set of art apps is poised to take a significant bite out of Adobe’s market share. These programs are full-featured to the point of having things you have to buy aftermarket in Adobe. Designer is Affinity’s answer to Illustrator. It is a desktop vector art program with every feature you could ever want. Designer is available for Mac desktop or iPad.

Affinity Photo for iPad

Adobe Digital Art Software Free

Affinity is also ready to answer your raster art needs. Photo by Affinity is analogous to Photoshop. Its user interface is a bit smoother, however, with cleaver skin changes based on the type of task you’re looking to complete.

Both Affinity apps are inexpensive when compared to Photoshop and Illustrator. If you’re looking for a great program to learn photo editing or raster drawing with, look no further than Photo and Photo for iPad.

Inspire Pro

For all the painters out there, Inspire Pro turns your iPad into the ultimate painting canvas. This is one of those simple raster drawing apps that can produce some really fantastic artwork thanks for super realistic brushes and massive canvas sizes. You can download Inspire Pro from the Apple App store.

MediBang Paint

A few key features make Medibang’s apps the best drawing app for some artists. The app is available on any platform you can think of, from Windows and Mac desktops to Apple and Android tablets. They all have a cloud feature, which allows you to easily store, share, and open your work from any device. This is one of the free drawing apps you really should check out if you want to start drawing today easily and cheaply.

Procreate

Procreate is an iOS-only app designed to fully harness the power of Apple’s popular iPad Pro and Apple Pencil combination. More than just a drawing app, Procreate combines many of the powerful tools you’d expect to find in a much more robust program like Photoshop. Layers, custom brushes, and all sorts of special effects are available on your tablet. You can export images, with intact layers, straight to PSD format to open in Photoshop. For on-the-go art, check out their iPhone version as well.

Zen Brush 2

Zen Brush is a simple ink brush app for mobile devices. Of the drawing apps for free, it’s super inexpensive and fun to use, but it is pretty limited. But then, ink and paper are pretty limited too, but that hasn’t stopped artists from making amazing artworks with them for the last thousand years.

Pixelmator Pro

Pixelmator Pro is a Mac OS app that combines many features and functions of other apps all into one tidy app. Pixelmator features many of the best features for drawing and the standard photo editing functions of other editors. It also features a 'layouting' mode for publishing and graphic design work. Their iOS app for mobile is really more of a photo editor rather than an art app.

Assembly

Those in the graphic design world know that there’s a lot more to digital art creation beyond hand sketching. Illustrator and other vector programs use shapes to “assemble” designs, and this is the idea beyond the Assembly app. By simplifying this process, the app allows users to create logos and design elements with ease quickly. Assembly is made for iOS devices.

Graphic

Formerly iDraw, Graphic is a full-featured vector design program for Mac, iPhone, or iPad. The program has all of the features of its more popular competitors, and it allows for the creation of anything from portraits to technical layout and CAD style drawings.

Inkist

Inkist is a super basic drawing app that is available for Mac computer and iOS devices. The mobile app is currently free. It’s not flashy, but it has all the right feature to make your artwork pop.

ArtStudio

Luckyclan’s ArtStudio is a full-featured raster art app for iPad or iPhone. It features multiple canvas sizes, layers with masks, over 400 brushes, unlimited undo/redo, and even over 40 filters.

Pixaki

Rizer’s Pixaki has a bit of a limited audience, but if you’re into pixel art, you’re going to love it. Export your creations to GIFs and other simple animation formations. The program can open and save to all the popular formats, including Photoshop, PNGs, and ZIP archives. Start with a sketch or photo, and soon you are rocking it retro style like it’s 1990.

Powerful tools like 3D rendering and over 80 brushes make this one of the best full-featured art apps for Android devices.

ArtRage

If you’re looking for great drawing apps that can work on nearly any computer or tablet, you’ve got to check out ArtRage. ArtRage is available in multiple versions, including their free drawing apps called ArtRage Lite for Windows and Mac computers. This program and a loyal following of users, with many fantastic tutorials and inspiration available from other artists.

Concepts

The Concepts App is an interesting program aimed at professional designers that work on Apple, Windows, and Google devices. It uses vector drawings to store ideas; it is very much like a pocket notebook that has gone entirely digital. From brainstorm to “exploring happy accidents,” as the company puts it, to rendering captivating color illustrations and sharing them with the built-in presentation mode, Concepts has your creative brain covered.

Comic Draw

If drawing comics is your beat, Comic Draw is worth checking out. The app is tailor-made for creating single panel cartoons on your mobile device. Things to consider when choosing a drawing app:

Platform Matters

If you're serious about taking up digital drawing, consider your hardware choices carefully. Ideally, you'll want to sample the exact tablet and computer setup with the stylus of your choice. In short, some are glitchier than others and creating art requires more finesse than some can deliver.

If possible, consider a tablet with a stylus made by the same manufacturer, for example, the Apple iPad Pro with the Apple Pencil. This ensures the two pair perfectly for the smoothest possible drawing experience.

Also, look for pressure sensitivity. Different styluses handle the task differently. The feedback provided with pressure sensitivity adds an extra realism that makes drawing on your tablet as close to analog pencil and paper as you can imagine.

As with all apps, be sure to check the operating system used by the app of your choice. The most popular platforms are Windows, MacOS, Apple iOS, and Android, and unfortunately, very few apps work on all of them.

Raster vs. Vector Drawing Apps

In the digital world, there are two sorts of images you can draw. Raster images, like JPG or PNG photographs, are drawn pixel by pixel. If you zoom in or enlarge the picture, it will get blurrier and blurrier if it exceeds the pixel size of the image. Think of this as drawing on paper, and you are limited by how large your paper is. You cannot expand the paper size like you cannot expand the pixels. Drawing a raster image is as simple and reasonably intuitive, depending on the app.

Vector drawings solve this problem but unfortunately, add much more complexity. Vector images, like AI or EPS formats, are the world standard in the printing industry. These pictures are made more like computer programs than photographs. In vector drawing applications, you make many paths (lines or shapes) that make up your image. It takes a bit more practice. Some vector apps make the process super simple, but the professional programs with all the bells and whistles take a bit of getting used to.

3D Programs

No discussion of online drawing apps would be complete without a word about three-dimensional drawing apps. If you're looking to create 3D modeling or going for that other-worldly feel that is everywhere, you'll want to make sure to pick the best drawing app that is capable of producing 3D images too. And don't feel left out if you got your drawing apps for free, some of these include 3D rendering also!

Conclusion

Now that you have an idea of how many free drawing apps are out there to choose from, you may feel a bit taken back. But remember, the most fun part of finding the best canvas for your project of choice is the adventure in trying them all out! So which do you think is the best drawing app?

Do Have Malware On Macbook

Jun 29, 2012

Using Firefox 13.0 and 13.01 Have a vague recollection of doing an update of Flash or Java but am not certain.I've been reading a lot of info around this problem- none of it describes the exact problem I am having.
1. Suddenly I am unable to get Google.I click Google in the search bar (upper right in firefox window)or type it into the address bar and it just hangs.May connect after a very, very long time. Also.. many websites will not stop loading unless I click the X in the address bar.Yahoo (which I had never used until now) comes up quickly.
2.I did the security update. The next time I used Google, it opened quickly.Did searches. Back to normal.
Or so I thought.
3.Within a couple of hours, was back to previous behaviour even if I get to the Google home page, it will not do a search.
4.Repeated all of the above with Safari. Same story.
5.Have checked with Activity monitor with Thomas Reed's malware list -
and can not see anything that seems to co-relate.

MacBook Pro :: IOS 8.1.1 - How To Get Rid Of Malware Like Ad Pop Ups

Dec 7, 2014

I have an Apple laptop (MacBook Pro late 2011). Lately, ads have been popping out all over the place everytime I click my mouse to move to another webpage or even within a webpage. Sometimes, the popups open first than the page I wanted. I know this is malware but I don't know to how get rid of them. Since Safari is my browser, everytime the popups become unbearable I would go to the Preferences and delete the cookies..And start all over again. I've called the Apple Support once and they didn't notice anything wrong with my hardware. It's this malware attached to certain programs or sites..

MacBook :: Remove The Mal/Badsrc-M Malware?

Mar 19, 2012

An email from an old friend contained an innocuous-looking link that led to a Mal/Badsrc-M virus landing on the hard drive, in the Firefox Library. It is not removable. In Trash, it leaves a copy where it was removed. In emptying Trash, it replicates intensively so that Trash cannot be emptied until the file is returned to where it was found. Then, Time Machine stays in 'Preparing' mode and does not back up the drive. Online information via Sophos declares this virus to affect only Windows. I beg to differ.Â

If you’ve ever opened your MacBook, MacBook Pro, or MacBook Air after it’s been asleep for a while only to discover that its battery has drained since you last used it, you’re not alone.

You might think that the battery shouldn’t drain at all while your Mac sleeps, but in fact, there are several battery-consuming processes going on in the background. This is perfectly normal and not a fault with the battery.

However, if you’ve ever wondered why your MacBook runs out of battery so quickly, there are several things you can do to stop it.

How do I stop my Mac’s battery from draining?

Here are some of the solutions to fix Mac battery drain while in sleep mode.

1. Unplug USB devices

Malware For Macbook Pro

USB devices that draw power from your Mac may continue to use your Mac power while it’s asleep. For example, a USB transceiver for a mouse or external keyboard that remains connected to the device and plugged into your MacBook will drain your battery. The only way to stop this is to unplug the device.

2. Check your Mac for unnecessary background processes

One possible reason for your MacBook battery draining while it sleeps is processes running in the background that you know nothing about. These are often initiated by login items. Login items are applications that get automatically opened when you log in. They can consume a lot of CPU resources and Mac energy.

It’s easy to turn login items off:

  1. Open System Preferences.
  2. Go to User & Groups and click your account.
  3. Switch to Login Items tab
  4. Select the login items you want to remove and press “-” sign below.

And you’re done.

3. Scan your Mac for malware

Viruses, trojans, adware, and other malware can decrease your battery life. The malicious agents often run parts of software on the background, so it’s worth checking your Mac for security threats.

Luckily, it’s easy to quickly scan your Mac for malware using an app like CleanMyMac X. This utility can identify different types of malware and remove it straight away.

  1. Download the free version of CleanMyMac X. Install and launch the app.
  2. Select the Malware removal module in the sidebar.
  3. Click Scan.
  4. Hopefully, CleanMyMac will report that it has found nothing and your Mac is free from malware. If not, follow the on-screen instructions to remove the malware it has found.

Detecting malware manually might be tiresome and a long process; CleanMyMac X does a deep scan of your Mac’s system to reveal threats that can hide in unexpected places.

Remove Malware From Macbook Pro

You can configure CleanMyMac X to run automatic malware scans.

- Go to the menu bar and click on the CleanMyMac X menu sign.

- Click on Preferences.

- Go to Protection tab.

How To Check For Malware On Macbook Pro

- Check “Enable real-time protection.”

4. Turn off Power Nap

Power Nap is a feature of macOS that allows your MacBook to continue checking for new emails as well as Calendar and other iCloud updates. However, to do that, it has to connect to iCloud, which means using battery power. So, if you want to reduce or eliminate the drain on the battery while your Mac sleeps, you’ll need to turn Power Nap off.

  1. Click the Apple menu and choose System Preferences.
  2. Choose Energy Saver.
  3. Uncheck the box next to “Enable Power Nap while on battery power.”

5. Disable Bluetooth while your MacBook sleeps

If you use a Bluetooth keyboard or mouse with your MacBook, a setting in System Preferences allows you to tap a key on the keyboard or a button on the mouse to wake it up. However, that means keeping Bluetooth enabled while your Mac sleeps, which will consume energy. So, if you want to prevent battery drain, disable this setting.

  1. Go to System Preferences.
  2. Click Bluetooth.
  3. Press Advanced.
  4. Uncheck the box next to “Allow Bluetooth devices to wake this computer.”

6. Disable notifications while your Mac sleeps

There is no setting that allows you to turn off notifications while your Mac is asleep, but there is one that disables them while the screen is sleeping. And, obviously, if your Mac is asleep, the screen is also sleeping.

  1. In System Preferences, choose Notifications.
  2. Click on Do Not Disturb at the top of the sidebar on the left.
  3. Check the box next to “When the display is sleeping.”

7. Reset the System Management Controller (SMC)

If nothing else works, you should try resetting your Mac’s SMC. The SMC manages various hardware processes, including how the battery works. While it’s something of a last resort, it won’t do your Mac any harm and is often recommended by Apple as a fix for problems that can’t be fixed with simpler solutions.

How to reset the SMC on MacBooks with a non-removable battery

  1. Turn off your MacBook.
  2. When it is shut down, press Shift+Control+Option (Alt) keys.
  3. While holding down those keys, press the power button (On MacBooks with the Touch Bar, the Touch ID button is the power button).
  4. Hold down the keys and the power button for ten seconds, then release them.
  5. Press the power button again to start up your Mac.

How to reset the SMC on MacBooks with a removable battery

  1. Turn off your Mac.
  2. Remove the battery.
  3. Push and hold the power button (Touch ID button) for 5 seconds.
  4. Reinstall the battery.
  5. Press the power button to start up your Mac.

There are many possible reasons why your MacBook battery drains overnight. The good news is that they can all be fixed. We recommend that you start by unplugging your USB devices and disabling login items. You can also use CleanMyMac X to check your Mac for malware, which can be why your Mac battery quickly runs out of charge. By following the steps above, you should notice your MacBook’s battery lasts much longer between charges.

Stay safe from virus and malware activity on your Macintosh with these simple tips.

How To Check Macbook Pro For Malware

Do you think your Mac has been infected by malware or a virus? It’s always possible, and here’s some ways to check.

Is it a virus? Is it malware?

First of all, don’t blame every single problem on malware or a virus. Many problems on the Mac appear to be virus related, but, actually are system related. If you’re not surfing underground sites or downloading software from places you shouldn’t, you shouldn’t have any virus or malware activity. In the off chance that you do get a virus or malware, here are some basic things you should do to get rid of the malware or virus on your Mac.

Let’s start with the browser.

On the Macintosh, you have a few choices for web browsers. The big three browsers that most people use are Google Chrome, Safari, and Firefox. Of these particular browsers, we prefer Google Chrome as our day-to-day browser. Google chrome for Mac is a fairly lightweight browser, has great security controls, and doesn’t seem to have the issues that the other browsers tend to have. Another great feature of Google Chrome is that it has Adobe Flash built right into it. This means you’re not hounded by the constant warnings to upgrade Adobe Flash. This is not to say Safari and Firefox are not safe, we just have a better track record with Google Chrome across-the-board. It’s wise to be careful what extensions you do load into Google Chrome. Only stick to known good browser extensions that are featured on the Google app store. if you do need to stick to using Safari as your daily web browser, you should turn off the extensions. Extensions and toolbars are a common way for malware and viruses to get into your Mac.

Use free Malware and Virus checking software

The best free software we have found to detect malware on your Mac is Malwarebytes. This software is remarkably easy-to-use, and can be run once or twice a week to check for any malware on your Macintosh based computer. We’ve been surprised a few times to find that we actually did have malware and the software has found it and deleted it every single time. This software doesn’t run automatically; you will have to run it by yourself once in a while. Another great piece of software we have found the check for viruses and malware on a Mac is from the company Sophos. This free software does run continually on the Macintosh and is also a good, lightweight piece of software for checking viruses and malware on a Mac. Apple can also detect and defeat certain malware from their end which is built into the Macintosh operating system. This is obviously not the best option because you have no control over what it finds and what it gets rid of.

Backing up your data is a wise move

With good data backups, a good portion of malware and viruses shouldn’t affect your data. Even better, have multiple backup options so your main data backup doesn’t get infected. We prefer multiple hard drives, and Google Drive as our backup options. Apple provides the Time Machine software that can back up every single Mac for free. All you have to do is provide an external hard drive for this option to work.

Be incognito whenever possible

Most browsers today offer an incognito mode, Or stealth mode, which hides your browsing activities. If there are sensitive sites you travel to, using one of the stealth modes may help limit the malware and virus activity on your Mac. The stealth mode can stop tracking and automatically turn off cookies on these sites as you visit them, which aids in your protection.

Stay away from filesharing and torrent sites

A lot of virus and malware activity on a Mac comes from filesharing and torrent sites. You should limit access to the sites if at all possible, especially if other family members are using the Mac. A good option in this case is to use a DNS filtering service such as OpenDNS to stop people in your household from accessing these and other dangerous sites.

Everyone should not be an administrator on the Mac

If your Mac has multiple users, and all them are set up as a administrators, this is not a good situation. This simply means that anybody using the Macintosh has full privileges on the Mac. They would actually be able to install any piece of software, including malware, that they deemed fit. Changing these users to standard users is a great way to bypass this problem. By making them standard users, they don’t have the privileges that an administrator would have. Therefore, they would not be able to make any changes on the system at all. By teaching these users good browsing habits, you should be able to limit the amount of malware and virus activity on your Mac.

Best Mac Apps: Utilities

1Password

Price: $49.99 | Link

1Password is the gold standard of password managers. With people cracking online accounts left and right these days, it’s more important than ever to use secure, complicated passwords – and never the same one twice. 1Password can keep track of all your passwords for you, and automatically enter them into your browser. The latest versions also keep track of sensitive data like insurance numbers, bank accounts, and credit card numbers, making it an important resource if your wallet or purse gets stolen. Apps are available for iPhone, iPad, and Android, making your data available wherever you are.

Caffeine

Price: free | Link

Have you ever started uploading a video to YouTube, walked away, and returned only to find your computer had gone to sleep (and thus corrupted the upload)?

While OS X is supposed to be smart enough to not do that, it doesn’t always work – and now, Caffeine will guarantee it.

Duet Display

Price: Free (on OS X, but requires a $16 iOS app) | Link

Built by a cadre of ex-Apple engineers, Duet Display lets you increase your screen space by taking advantage of your iPhone or iPad. With support for touch tracking and the full Retina display of your mobile device, Duet Display can be a godsend if you’re stuck editing on a cramped coffeeshop table.

There are a number of wireless iPad display options, but Duet Display is our top pick.

Dropbox

Price: Free (various premium service levels) | Link

By now, you’re probably familiar with Dropbox, but if you aren’t, this is the company that made cloud storage famous. These guys make sharing and storing files easier than ever, and helps make all your data accessible on each of your devices.

Viscosity

Price: Free 30-day trial, then $9 | Link

Viscosity is a great replacement for the built-in VPN tool in OS X. Designed to let you log on with just a couple of clicks, Viscosity will work with a number of VPN clients, whether you need to log into work, protect yourself at coffeeshops, or simply evade regional lockouts on media.

Chrome Remote Desktop

Price: Free | Link

There have been a number of tools over the years that let you log into your computer when you’re not at home, and one-by-one, they’ve all turned to a non-free model. Not so with the Chrome Remote Desktop. As long as both your home and away PCs are on, you’ll be able to log in and control the remote PC without paying a dime.

Note: both PCs will also need to have the Chrome web browser installed and allowed to run in the background.

Crashplan

Price: Free to external drives, 30-day cloud storage; $60 per year for backing up one computer; $150 per year for backing up between 2 – 10 computers | Link

Crashplan is backup made simple. If you don’t want to pay, the company will offer you free use of their backup software (if Time Machine is not to your liking) as well as 30 days worth of online backups.

Their paid plans are really compelling, however: $60 a year gets you unlimited online backups of your entire computer and network attached storage. You can retrieve individual files or, should emergency strike, pay to have a new hard drive with your backup overnighted to your house.

TextExpander

Price: Free trial, then $45 | Link

TextExpander is kind of like autocorrect, but for your Mac. You can program snippets of text into the TE interface, and when you type them into nearly any program, TextExpander replaces them with your pre-chosen macro.

For example, you could type ‘soon5’ in a meeting email, and TextExpander would replace it with “I’m running late, but I should be there in five minutes.” The new version is easier than ever, and TE includes a fun chart that will show you how many hours you save, based on a specific typing speed.

Airfoil

Price: Free trial, then $29 | Link

Airfoil lets you send any audio from your Mac to any Airplay source – speakers, Airports, AppleTVs, you name it. It offers granular, per-app control that the system option sorely lacks, and lets you send audio out to multiple sets of speakers.

Rogue Amoeba, developers of Airfoil, include a free copy of Airfoil Speakers with each purchase, which lets you receiveAirplay audio on your Mac (or iPhone / Android device).

One fun way to use both of these is to set up Airfoil and Airfoil Speakers on your Mac, then Airplay your iPhone audio to your Mac – this way you can send one phone’s audio out over multiple sets of Airplay speakers, something that is otherwise impossible to do.

F.Lux

Price: Free | Link

F.lux is based on the idea that seeing blue light late at night is bad for your eyes, and impairs your quality of sleep. The app works by changing the color temperature of your display (computer displays are typically pretty “blue”) as the sun sets; by the time you’re ready to call it a night, things can be looking pretty orange.

It definitely reduces stress on your eyes; if you don’t believe us, try quitting F.lux after you’ve used it for an hour – you’ll be scrambling to re-enable it.

GrandPerspective

Price: Free | Link

One of the most frustrating things about the Mac to this day (not that the PC is all that much better, frankly) is the inability to see your disk space. How much free space do you have, what folders and files are using it all, etc.

GrandPerspective is a free utility that gets rid of all that storage uncertainty by displaying information in an easy-to-read, blocky interface.

Little Snitch

Price: $35 | Link

This is the best firewall you didn’t know you needed. Little Snitch not only monitors for inbound connections, but also outbound connections. It’s a great program for finding out what apps on your computer are calling home and transmitting information; you can block any of them at any time, just by tapping a button.

The devs recently released a companion product known as Micro Snitch; Micro Snitch has a similar philosophy to Little Snitch, except it explicitly monitors your webcam and microphone, so you can be sure nobody is using them to record you.

Malwarebytes

Price: Free | Link

Worried about whether your Mac can catch a virus or worm? With the platform’s growing popularity, you probably should be.

Marlwarebytes is a trusted name in PC security, and with a recent acquisition, they’re bringing expertise over to the Mac.

The software itself is free, but you can sign up for premium service and support at a rate of just $25/year.

Capture Gif

Price: Free, or $6 | Link

It may seem like a strange addition, but the ability to quickly record your screen and make GIFs can come in handy. You can keep it simple with basic text GIFs, or record yourself doing full-screen actions (take a look at our El Capitan Split View overview for an idea).

Capture Gif offers a free version with limited settings, but the $6 full copy is cheap and offers you the ability to change the framerate of the GIF as well as innovative mouse tracking features.

Best Mac Apps: Internet

GoogleChrome

Price: Free | Link

Google’s internet browser has become the world’s most browser, and for good reason. Unfortunately, those reasons don’t really exist on the Mac – not only is Chrome slower than Safari, but it’s also a power hog and can drop your battery life by up to an hour!

Still, it has its uses. Chrome comes bundled with an always-updated version of Adobe Flash, so you’ll never need to worry about updating a version for the Mac. Need to check out a Flash-enabled site? Just spin up Chrome, check it out, and shut it down. Given how many vulnerabilities Flash tends to introduce, it’s worth keeping exposure as limited as possible.

Skype

Price: Free | Link

You’re probably aware of Microsoft’s VoIP product by this point, but it’s worth pointing out. Despite competing alternatives, Skype’s sheer cross-platform connectivity and pervasiveness means that it’s always handy to have around if someone wants to call you.

Transmission

Price: Free | Link

When it comes to BitTorrent, the cat is out of the bag, and it isn’t going back in. We like Transmission for an OS X torrent client, because it’s cross platform and open source, and also because it isn’t constantly trying to get you to download things you don’t want (ahem, μTorrent).

Best Mac Apps: Music and Video

Spotify

Price: Free, or $10/month Premium tier | Link

Spotify is one of the world’s largest music streaming services, with over 75 million users accessing either its free or pay tiers. The software itself is completely free, supporting your listening with advertising inserted into the streams. Sap erp 6 0 keygen torrent software.

If you don’t mind ponying up, however, you can snag unlimited ad-free music streaming for just $10/ month, with the ability to skip around to whatever music you like, and cache songs to your device for offline listening.

iOS and Android apps round out the experience.

VLC

Price: Free | Link

If you keep any quantity of your own media, VLC will be well known. For everyone else, this app is the gold standard for watching videos from the internet. No nonsense codec downloads, nothing else to install, just download it, open, and play.

Best Mac Apps: Productivity

AirMail

Price: $10 | Link

Running just $10 in the Mac App Store, AirMail builds upon the basic functionality in the Mail app and adds some pretty nice integration and power user features (superior keyboard shortcuts, snoozing an email like Gmail’s Inbox does). You can import files directly from services like Dropbox or Google Drive, or send attachments that are too large to email by using Droplr. One of the best features over Mail, however, is how AirMail has worked to integrate itself into the best known third-party productivity apps – so if you use software like Wunderlist, Fantastical, and Evernote, you should take a look at AirMail.

Clear

Price: $10 | Link

Clear, like Mailbox, made waves for introducing powerful features paired with an extremely simple and intuitive user interface. Mailbox was for, well, email, but Clear is for keeping you focused at the tasks on hand. It works best when you pair it with the iPhone and iPad apps (which together cost a $5 one-time fee); there’s also an app for the Apple Watch

Fantastical

Price: $40 | Link

OS X’s Calendar isn’t bad, but it’s also not very useful if you need to track more than the very occasional event. Fantastical (now actually Fantastical 2) is extremely powerful, with a natural language engine that lets you remember events just by typing them out. It comes with a free trial if you don’t feel the need to shell out $40 quite just yet.

Microsoft Office

Price: $70 / year for 1 PC or Mac, $100/yr for 5 PCs or Macs, $150 one-time purchase for 1 computer | Link

There may be the free Google Docs and Apple iWork suites, but nothing can beat the powerhouse that is Microsoft Office. Aside from the fact that its omnipresence nearly requires you to use it (so that your files can all be shared between jobs), new versions for iOS and Android make it very easy to work on your projects on the go. While Microsoft’s attempts to send Office into the cloud with a monthly or yearly subscription, they do still offer standalone installations.

Best Mac Apps: Graphics and Photo Editing

Pixelmator

Price: Free 30-day trial, then $30 | Link

Adobe’s Photoshop CC might reign supreme at the top of the image editing heap, but if you’re not a professional, or very serious amateur designer or photographer, it probably doesn’t make much sense to shell out for it. For the price of less than one month of Adobe’s Creative Cloud subscription, you can get a permanent standalone copy of Pixelmator. There are definitely Mac photo editing apps out there that can do more than Pixelmator, but few can match it on a features-per-dollar basis.

Best Mac Apps: Programming

2016

Textmate 2.0 (beta)

Price: Free | Link

If you’re a programmer, you know that your choice of environment not only says a lot about you but can impact your workflow in drastic and unforeseen ways. Should Vim be getting you down, take a look at Textmate’s most recent version, a product of Macromates.

Textmate offers an easy way to work on a project’s many files at once without getting lost, and features powerful plug-in architecture should you need a tool that it lacks.

Best Mac Apps: Emulators

Andy Android Emulator

Price: Free | Link

If you’re on a Mac, chances are you probably prefer to use iOS over Android. Thinking about seeing how things work on the other side? The Andy Android emulator works extremely well to give you a virtual Android tablet. For the most part, this virtual model works exactly like you’d expect.

The only downside is that the most recent release – which came out in November – only goes up to Android 4.2.2, so some apps and features might not work. Hopefully, we’ll see an update to Android M or N before too long. If you just want to try things out, however, it’s more than good enough.

We’ve put together a list of some of the best Mac apps anywhere: if you’re looking for a new utility, web browser, or photo app, you’ll probably find what you need on this list.

Whether you’ve been using a Mac for a very long time, or you’re unboxing your very first MacBook, it’s always nice to see the sort of software and tools that other people use.

While we don’t include them in our official best Mac apps list, since they’re free and from Apple, new users should always check out Apple’s apps that come with every Mac purchase.

Photo Editing Software for Windows and Its Application Areas

What is meant by edit photos? To edit a photo means the computer-assisted editing of photos or digital images. Mainly computer-aided digital imaging is used to remove vulnerabilities in photos that are common when shooting photos. These include shooting errors such as underexposure, low contrast, red flashes or disturbing objects in the picture, just to name a few examples.
However, a digital post-processing of the images is enormously important when it comes to the impression of the final image in the viewer. All images, which are published today, both on the Internet and in the print media, have previously been edited in any way.
Of course, post-processing of the photos has the main purpose of eliminating shooting errors such as poor exposure, red-eye or lack of contrast, but also to work creatively with images, making them more interesting with photographic effects or light reflections and, for example, the images for creating interesting photo collages or individual photo calendars and photo albums. All this should be done for the beginner without much training.

Whether you take photos for fun or business, it’s not an easy task to find a photo editing software that can best fit your photo editing needs with so many different options on the market. We believe that it’s easier to find something when you know what you’re looking for, so we came up with three criteria that you should take into account when looking for your one and only photo app. So, we recommend you to make your choice based on the features you want your app to have, the platform you’re going to use it on, and the price that you’re ready (or not) to pay for it. This will help you to filter out the irrelevant options and narrow your choices down to a few most suitable ones.

Features

We believe that all photo editing apps can be divided into several categories based on what they have to offer to users of different levels and needs. These categories are:

  1. Photo editing software for beginners. If you’re just starting out in photography or need to apply quick corrections to your photos once in a while, you should opt for a beginner-friendly photo editor like Paint.NET or Pixlr. Such editors usually have a clean and straightforward interface without too many tabs and icons, and a decent set of tools for applying basic corrections.
  2. Professional photo editing apps are designed for professional photographers and advanced hobbyists and give more control over photo processing and editing. Their use requires more specialized knowledge of photography and high photo-editing skill. Pro-grade photo editors like Adobe Lightroom or Capture One Pro often come with an in-build photo management system, provide support for RAW files, tethered shooting, and presets.
  3. Software for creating and editing vector graphics. As you probably know, there are two types of graphics: raster and vector. Raster graphics represent images as a pixel grid, while vector graphics use lines and curves. Vector software can’t change pixels and thus is ineffective for photo correction. However, you can use vector software to add graphics to your photo such as text, shapes, lines. Many raster photo editors include a handful of vector tools, like GIMP or Photoshop.
  4. AI photo software uses AI-based technology that allows reducing manual photo editing to a minimum - even the most complex editing tasks such as retouching or removing objects can be done with just a few clicks. Such apps are a popular choice among beginners and pros alike as they substantially speed up the editing process without affecting the quality. Luminar 4 is one of a few decent AI photo editing tools on the market.
  5. Open source photo editing apps are apps for which the source code can be viewed and changed by any user, like GIMP. It means that any user can interact with the program code to correct bugs, improve the exciting features and add new ones. Open-source software is usually completely free and for this reason much beloved by users of different levels of expertise.
Platform

There is another thing you should take into account when looking for your perfect photo-editing app - the platform you’re going to use it on. If you’re a Mac or Windows user, you’ve got a wider choice of options unlike, for example, Chrome OS users, who have a much more limited choice. Let’s take a closer look at what we have here.

  • Windows is the most compatible with most of the photo software you're going to want to use. If you’re a Windows user, you have a great number of options to choose from including most widely-used apps like GIMP, Luminar 4, Lightroom, Paint.NET, and more.
  • As Mac is the second most popular operating system, you won’t have any troubles finding a photo app compatible with it. Here you still have a vast number of options including Lightroom, Aurora HDR, Luminar 4, etc. The popular GIMP, however, isn’t compatible with Mac.
  • If you’re a Chromebook user, your choice is limited to Google Play apps. Those, however, include a pretty good number of options, such as GIMP, Photoshop, Lightroom, and others. If you have strong programming skills, you could try installing external apps as well.

It doesn’t matter what platform you’re using if you choose to work in an online photo editor. It runs in a browser and doesn’t need installing.

If you’re looking for an app for your Android or iOS device, you should check what your app store has to offer. Some web and desktop apps, like Pixlr or Lightroom, however, have mobile versions.

Latest Professional Photo Editing Software

No matter how good the software is, its price can be a real dealbreaker. Luckily, not all photo editing software is paid for. There are such apps as GIMP and Paint.NET that are completely free. Paid options include subscription-based (Photo Studio Ultimate 2020, Lightroom) and one-time-fee (Luminar 4, Photoshop Elements, Affinity Photo) software. Some paid apps though have free trial versions, so you can test an app for free for several days to see if it’s worth the money.
